Former Ringling clown to teach clown workshop

Two years ago, Matthew Belopavlovich stood stranded atop a 25-foot tower while a handful of clowns, dressed as knights, circled beneath, trying to figure out how to save him. They couldn’t. Then, a very small man arrived, shimmied up Matthew’s hair and carried him to safety.

Welcome to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Matthew was living the dream, his dream: life as clown with the greatest show on earth.

“To be a clown, you need a big heart. You need an open mind,” said Matthew, now a Patel Conservatory theater instructor.

Matthew will be teaching clowning skills, like slapstick comedy and juggling, and passing along his experience with the circus in an upcoming clowning workshop.

For students in Grades 3 - 8
Feb. 7, 2015
2 to 5 p.m.

“I had a dream to be a clown since second grade. My parents took me everywhere there was a show,” said Matthew.

In “the Rapunzel gag,” he starred as the long-locked lass with about 30 feet of fabric “hair.” He was one of 12 clowns in the 120+ person cast, and learned a lot during his time in the magical world of makeup, costumes, high-stakes improv, unpredictable audience interaction and adrenaline-by-way-of-comedy.

A native of Wisconsin, Matthew earned his bachelor of fine arts degree in acting at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After graduating, he auditioned twice for Ringling, and didn’t get the job. Instead of giving up, he took a piece of advice from a former theater professor: create your own work if there’s no work for you.

So Matthew staged two of his own clown creations, By the Time You Read This and LAUFFITI, the latter shown at Silver Meteor Gallery in Ybor City before going to New York City.

He auditioned again in New York for Ringling, who had set up an impromptu ring in Grand Central Station during the middle of the day.

“They said, ‘you should be able to captivate us, but can you capture the people in their day-to-day routine and bring them to the ring?’” said Matthew. “It was nerve-wracking. And awesome.”

The intensity of the audition spurred Matthew to step up his game, and that audition landed him a contract to travel with the circus starting in 2012. He was off to clown college, then into the show.

“To work with Ringling and the people on their clowning staff was heaven. I got to be in a clown costume and design my own makeup and be on the floor during clown college—that alone was a dream come true. I lived on a train, a real circus train! I went to almost every state, we did outreach in hospitals, with the Sunshine Kids organization and Boys & Girls Club. It was mind-blowing. It was everything.”

Matthew re-joined the Patel Conservatory theater department in 2014 after two years with the circus. (He also taught here from 2010 to 2011.)

“It was a whirlwind of experiences—so much more than clowning. I learned a lot about the circus, and I learned a lot about myself,” he says. “The Patel mission, to dream, reach, discover, create … I can speak to this mission because I did it. Nothing was handed to me, although I had a lot of love and support, but I made it happen. I applied myself to my career.”

Matthew will teach the upcoming workshop along with guest artist Dustin Portillo and student guest artist Wesley Williams.

Portillo is a highly skilled improv and comedy actor who toured with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for seven years. His performance credits also include work at Six Flags Great Escape, Busch Gardens Tampa and with the clown troupe, Aga-Boom.

Williams, adept at juggling clubs, knives and fire, recently completed his second summer tour with the Vermont-based Circus Smirkus.

During the workshop, students will learn basic slapstick comedy techniques, proper clown makeup application, balloon twisting, juggling and get an inside scoop on what it’s like to be a professional clown.

For the students, I say to them: ‘I did it, and you can do it, too.”

As a dialect coach, she guides actors in finding and using their own voices, and in the process, often helps them discover a new sense of confidence and empowerment.

“Andrea so effortlessly pulls honesty out of the actor,” said Ami Sallee, Patel Conservatory theater chair. Sallee got to see Caban in action last week as she worked with students in our audition workshop.

“Every student who walked out that night was in awe of the experience,” she said.

Caban is certified in both Fitzmaurice Voicework and Knight/Thompson Speechwork and she trains other teachers in the certification programs for both.

Many Patel Conservatory theater faculty will participate in the upcoming workshop, which is geared towards helping actors become more of themselves and clear in their intentions, both in a scene and in life.

“Artists who live and work in NYC, Chicago, LA and other major cities understand the necessity and benefits of continuous training,” said Sallee.

Audition workshops feature guest artists

Actor Billy Tighe of the Broadway tour of Wicked visited the cast of
Music Man Jr. last month. Guest instructors will join us for our upcoming
audition workshop series.

Join us for the Patel Conservatory audition workshop series, starting tomorrow night, Feb. 8!

Being prepared for an audition helps alleviate much of the pressure. Knowing what to expect and having a professional attitude will go a long way in helping you feel confident and ready to perform.

Tomorrow’s workshop focuses on Professionalism and Confidence. Theater instructor Eugenie Bondurant will guide you through the process of the audition and what you need to succeed.

Bondurant is an actress and certified Meisner instructor who brought her on-camera acting program from Los Angeles to the Patel Conservatory in 2004.

She’ll review what to expect at theater, film, television and commercial auditions.
You’ll learn what to put on your resume, headshot guidelines, how-to slate, proper audition attire, audition etiquette and where to seek out auditions.

Our upcoming workshops on Feb. 15 and 22 will feature guest instructors that will help you handle Monologues and Cold Readings and Audition Songs and Dance Combinations.

Being part of the Straz Center has its perks. Our students often have the opportunity to learn from guest artists from touring productions.

Andrea Caban to teach Monologues and Cold Readings audition workshop

The Patel Conservatory welcomes Andrea Caban as a guest instructor for our upcoming audition workshop series.

Caban, who brings her one-woman show Questions My Mother Can’t Answer to the Straz Center this month, will be the guest instructor for the Monologues and Cold Readings workshop, Feb. 15 at the Conservatory.

Caban has a bachelor’s degree in theater arts from the University of South Florida, and a master’s in acting from the University of California, Irvine. She is now based out of the Los Angeles area.

Questions My Mother Can’t Answer is Caban’s third solo show. She’s toured it around the country and in Capetown, S. Africa.

“It’s the story of how I was hit by a New York City cab, and not feeling like my life was fitting afterwards,” said Caban, who is also a dialect coach and plays eight different women in the show.

“Their stories are interwoven through my story. It’s about finding my way back to my own life,” she said.

As a solo artist and an educator, Caban teaches students how to develop their own work, and she teaches outreach classes that help people apply theater skills to their personal lives.

“When you get on stage and own who you are in front of a group of people, you learn a lot about yourself,” said Caban.

When it comes to audition monologues, she suggests, “Choosing material that speaks to you personally is very important because you want to allow some of your true self to be seen.”

She advises having at least two monologues prepared before going into an audition.

“You should have one that sounds like you...you want to use words that could almost be your own words. And, you should have a piece that really scares you and pushes you to take risks.”

The more material you have in your repertoire, the better. But it takes time to build a solid repertoire, so study what’s out there, she said.

“Start with something that already inspires you...Think about actors whom you admire and look at what they’ve done in the past, then look at the writers of those roles.”

For the Monologue and Cold Readings class, she recommends bringing material to workshop.

“The way to find material is to read a lot of plays and see a lot of plays,” she said.

Friday, Feb. 15, 2013
5 to 8 p.m.
The cost is $50.

The class is Part II of the Conservatory’s audition workshop series, held Fridays, Feb. 9 through Feb. 22, 2013. The cost for all three workshops is $135.

Purchase the three-workshop package, and you’ll receive a voucher good for one 30-minute private acting lesson at the Patel Conservatory.
Register online at patelconservatory.org or over the phone by calling 813-222-1002.
